Silicone Implants: 7 Things You Might Not Know

Opting for breast augmentation is a significant decision for many women. Silicone implants, widely chosen, bring more benefits than just increased volume. This blog shares insights crucial to your decision-making in your breast augmentation journey. At The Geldner Center, we understand the importance of your choices. Let’s delve into the world of silicone breast implants together.

All breast implants are silicone.

Silicone serves as the common foundation for both saline and silicone implants. While we often refer to silicone breast implants as silicone gel filled breast implants, saline breast implants are made from silicone too. The outer shells of these implants are crafted from a silicone material shell since it is one of the least reactive plastic materials in the human body. The fill material of saline breast implants is saline (salt water) and the fill material of silicone implants is silicone gel. Compared to saline, silicone implants offer an unparalleled natural look.

Silicone breast implants have been used for over 60 years.

Silicone gel implants have come a long way since their introduction in 1961. The shells have evolved to be more pliable, while the gel inside has transitioned from a liquid consistency to cohesive gel implants. These advancements have resulted in a natural feel and stable shape.

Silicone breast implants are FDA approved.

In the 1960’s, breast implants entered the market without FDA pre-market approval. However, the 90s ushered in a new era of scrutiny, subjecting silicone gel implants to the same standards as any other medical device. Approval was granted after manufacturers submitted meticulous research, ensuring a trustworthy choice for your journey.

There are hundreds of breast implant models in the United States.

Within the United States, three manufacturers offer a diverse range of breast implant models, each distinguished by profiles, shapes, dimensions, and firmness. So, not all implants are the same. Each model differs from the other, allowing doctors to determine the best option for you to provide the best results possible.

Silicone implants may not need to be replaced.

Breast implants do not have a predetermined expiration date. Like any man-made object, they can experience wear and tear over time, but the likelihood of breakage or leakage is low so assuming that they need replacement at any specific time is false. The decision to replace breast implants is driven by specific needs or desires such as signs of breakage, infection, or cancer, or the personal desire for a size change or breast lift. If considering a lift after several years, it’s a good idea to replace the original implants, as the risk of breakage may increase with time.

Breast implants do not cause cancer.

There are no scientific studies that indicate an elevated risk of cancer with breast implants. A unique type of breast implant, specifically textured implants, have been associated with an uncommon form of cancer called Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). However, this does not mean that patients with textured implants need to have them removed. The decision depends on individual circumstances, and there are instances where textured implants remain an optimal choice for achieving excellent results. Consult with Dr. Geldner, a Chicago plastic surgeon, to see what type of implant would work best for you.

Silicone gel implants have fewer ripples than saline implants.

Despite their visual similarities, gel implants provide a more natural look and feel compared to saline implants. Saline implants, with their free-flowing filler material, may display more irregularities, especially when there’s limited tissue coverage. These irregularities, known as ripples or scallops, are more noticeable in saline implants, Choosing cohesive and firmer gel varieties significantly reduces these irregularities, resulting in a smoother, more natural looking appearance.
