Male Liposuction

Media surrounds us with images of the perfect body. Lean, long, supple, athletic, buff bodies surround us in print and video. Sadly, that’s not what we see in the mirror. It’s wrong to assume that men don’t compare themselves with the images that surround us. We do, though not all of us care enough to do something about what we see. This is not purely vanity. Most men undergo physical transformations every decade. Our minds see a strong twenty year old, our eyes see a paunchy fifty year old.

Body contouring can be achieved through the combined use of liposuction and skin removal. The male liposuction contours the soft tissue; the excess skin is contoured to fit the body better. Liposuction is the traumatic removal of fat to create a contour change, but liposuction is not weight reduction surgery. Liposuction only tackles the fat between the body wall and the skin. Liposuction can create a substantial contour change that shows off the underlying muscles. It can also create a shape that enhances the underlying muscles by highlighting the contour hollows and leaves fat to look like muscle bulges.

High-Definition Liposculpture for Male Liposuction

We have the technological spectrum of devices to contour fat from just removing bulges to High-Definition Liposculpture. They are not the same. If the patient has a muffin top or localized areas of fat, and they don’t want a major physical contour change, we offer CoolSculpting. It reduces the bulges very well with essentially no downtime or risk. If they want to look lean and “ripped”, I recommend Vaser Liposculpture to get a high-definition result. The abdominal muscles look well defined with very little fat between the muscle bulges. Typically, the procedure is performed over the entire abdomen, including the back. The effect is striking.

Abdominoplasty for men is occasionally necessary to obtain the desired result. Consultation with Dr. Geldner can help you determine if you require a male abdominoplasty in conjunction with liposuction. If a patient needs an abdominoplasty but only liposuction is performed, it may result in a very irregular and potentially unfixable abdomen.

All procedures have risks. Liposuction and abdominoplasty have been implicated with the risk of blood clots developing in the leg veins and traveling to the heart. The best means of treating this problem is prevention. With Dr. Geldner’s superior skill, 25 years of experience, and his experienced and compassionate staff, we exceed our Chicago plastic surgery patients’ expectations.

Male liposuction is a cosmetic procedure specifically tailored to address the unique fat distribution and body contouring needs of men. While traditional liposuction techniques are similar for both men and women, male liposuction focuses on creating a more masculine and athletic appearance.

Key Differences:

  • Target Areas: Male liposuction often targets areas where men typically store fat, such as the abdomen, flanks (love handles), chest, and chin.
  • Contouring Goals: The goal is to achieve a more chiseled and defined look, highlighting muscle definition and creating a more sculpted physique.
  • Fat Consistency: Men’s fat tends to be more fibrous and dense compared to women’s fat, which can require different techniques and tools for effective removal.

Procedure:

  • Anesthesia: The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the extent of the treatment.
  • Liposuction Technique: Small incisions are made in the target areas, and a thin cannula is inserted to break up and suction out the fat. Techniques such as tumescent liposuction, ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL), Vaser, or laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) may be used for optimal results.

The result is a more contoured and masculine appearance, with improved definition in areas like the abdomen and chest.

Good candidates for male liposuction are men who are in good overall health and have specific areas of stubborn fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Ideal candidates typically meet the following criteria:

  • Healthy Lifestyle: Candidates should maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise routine but have localized fat deposits that do not respond to traditional weight loss methods.
  • Stable Weight: It is important for candidates to be at or near their ideal weight, as liposuction is not a weight-loss solution but a body contouring procedure.
  • Good Skin Elasticity: Having good skin elasticity helps ensure smooth and even contours after fat removal.
  • Realistic Expectations: Candidates should have a clear and realistic understanding of what liposuction can achieve and be committed to maintaining their results through a healthy lifestyle.
  • Non-Smokers: Smoking can interfere with the healing process and affect the final outcome, so candidates should be non-smokers or willing to quit before and after the procedure.

During the consultation, Dr. Geldner will evaluate your body composition, discuss your goals, and determine if you are a suitable candidate for male liposuction. He will also explain the procedure, expected results, and recovery process in detail.

Recovery after male liposuction involves several stages, and following Dr. Geldner’s post-operative care instructions is crucial for achieving optimal results.

Recovery Process:

  • Immediate Post-Operative Care: Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common after the procedure and can be managed with prescribed medications and compression garments. These symptoms typically subside within a few weeks.
  • Activity Restrictions: Patients should avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise for several weeks to ensure proper healing and minimize swelling.
  • Follow-Up Visits: Regular follow-up visits with the surgeon are essential to monitor healing and address any concerns.

Long-Term Care:

  • Final Results: While initial improvements can be seen within a few weeks, final results may take several months to fully manifest as residual swelling gradually subsides.
  • Maintaining Results: Maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise routine is important to preserve the contoured appearance achieved through the procedure.

Potential Risks:

  • Swelling and Bruising: These are common post-operative symptoms and usually resolve on their own within a few weeks.
  • Infection: As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection. Proper post-operative care and hygiene can help minimize this risk.
  • Asymmetry: There may be slight asymmetry in the treated areas, which can sometimes require additional touch-up procedures.
  • Numbness or Changes in Sensation: Temporary or permanent changes in sensation can occur in the treated areas, depending on the extent of the surgery.

Choosing a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Geldner significantly reduces the risk of complications. Dr. Geldner will provide detailed pre- and post-operative care instructions to ensure a smooth recovery and achieve the best possible results from your male liposuction. Regular follow-up appointments are crucial to monitor progress and address any concerns promptly.
