I always tell my patients preventative skincare is like working out: if you want a flawless face as you age, you have to build it up like you would a 6-pack. This includes what you do at home as well. If you wouldn’t go home from the gym and eat a pizza, why would you come in to see me for a treatment then go home and use drug-store-brand, chemical-filled products? You’d basically remove everything your aesthetician had just worked so hard to fix.
Certain products are imperative if you decide to be an anti-aging-a-holic. Here are some things worth investing in if you really want to take care of your skin.
Serums and eye creams are skincare products you will want to invest in
Eye creams should be used at least twice daily and applied in a light patting motion around the orbital bone with your ring finger. The skin there is so thin that it is prone to aging faster than other areas. Using a cream with ingredients like peptides and antioxidants can truly slow down this process and minimize tired looking eyes.
Another product you want to make sure you are using at home is a good exfoliating serum. Serums have very small acid or enzyme molecules making them easier to penetrate the skin. These enzymes and acids are usually the most powerful of active ingredients in your skincare regime. You want to be using one nightly that includes some type of acid or enzyme, or a Vitamin A (your technician will let you know what she thinks is best for your skin). These ingredients increase cell turnover and help healthy cells regenerate while sloughing off the dead skin cells that lead to fine lines.
You will also want to invest in an antioxidant serum with Vitamin C, Ferulic and/or other high potency antioxidants for use during the day. Daily use will protect you from the harsh environment we live in and decrease photo-aging.
So, next time you are paying your gym dues think about your medicine cabinet. If you don’t already invest in your skincare routine maybe it is time to start.
